What is the biggest challenge you face with your curly hair? I asked my older sister Stran this question and she said shine. My best friend Misha said volume and bounce. For as long as I can remember, frizz has been my biggest curly hair insecurity. And it doesn’t end there. For years, I’ve raved about the magic of styling products. Finding the right ones can legitimately make all the difference. There were hearts in my eyes when I learned there's an innovative discovery out there to help you achieve volume, bounce, texture, shine and FRIZZ-FREE curls all in one complete regimen. Too good to be true? Keep reading girl.
Say hello to the Discipline Curl Idéal Collection from Kérastase Paris. It’s their FIRST complete regimen dedicated to curly hair. I had a chance to chat with Kattia - Kérastase’s resident curl expert and owner of Buttery Studio Salon in NYC. I told her I love wearing my hair curly (when it cooperates) but sometimes it’s challenging to tame the frizz and keep the curls bouncy until my next wash. I even mentioned that I put so many products in my hair and never know if that’s a good or bad thing. She said, “For curly girls, it’s not about how many products - it’s about the right product.” She talked me through my frizzy curly hair challenges and gave me my product prescription. She recommend that I specifically try the Oléo-Curl cream from the new line. She said, “It’s going to give your curls great definition and protect from the frizz.” I decided to put the magic to the test and see if my #curlyhairprobs were about to be solved.Step 1: CLEANSECleansing Conditioner Curl Idéal- Before using, I researched that this is an innovative cleansing conditioner that can do so much in one step. Off the bat, I loved that it’s silicone and sulfate-free (I’ve been trying to avoid products with these ingredients!!) So I’m in the shower using this product. I noticed this cleansing conditioner was really nice because it was creamy, nourishing and didn’t weigh my hair down.To use: With wet hair, you just massage the product evenly into the scalp (in a circular motion). If you notice the lather is low on the first application (mine was) rinse your hair and repeat one more time. Don’t be fooled by the low lather, trust me it’s working. Kattia’s Tip: Use 4-7 pumps of product depending on your hair length and thickness. Feel free to wash twice if you want extra cleansing and nutrition power. I used 5 pumps and that was good for me. After one use, my hair noticeably felt light, clean and like I already had some extra bounce.
Step 2: TREATMasque Curl Idéal- This is perfect for thick to very thick, curly hair. I especially liked how this masque helped reduce volume and frizz. But don’t worry, you’re not losing the fluffy volume! It’s just controlling it while delivering strength and nutrients to the hair fiber. I prefer using the masque once a week!To use: Apply to washed, damp hair from root to ends (if you’d like -sometimes I just add it to the ends). If you have thick, very curly hair like me, this is a great second step to control volume and frizz. Kattia mentioned to me that the more I use it, the better the results over-time to provide even more nourishment and strengthen the curls. For the best results, try to leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing.Step 3: PRIME & STYLEOléo-Curl Cream-– It’s prime time! I was especially excited to try this after Kattia mentioned that it would be the cure to my frizz-probs. After the shower, I put this in as a leave-in treatment and noticed it wasn’t sticky or too thick of a cream. When it dried, the curl definition was unreal (I mean this in the best way). I couldn’t believe there was natural movement in my thick curls. Best of all - it reduced my frizz by like 90%. I’ll definitely be taking this with me to Mexico next month!!To use: On towel-dried hair, spread the creamy product downwards on lengths and ends, gently relaxing curls with fingers. Then, style as usual. Kattia’s tip: You can use this on second-day hair to help revive your curls. Just smooth over lengths and ends on dry hair, pushing up curls to reshape. It works!
Mousse Curl Idéal- If you think 80’s mom hair when you hear the word ’mousse’, don’t panic. This is actually the first mousse I’ve tried in a long time (I was hesitant) but it totally enhanced the shape and definition of my curls. I applied the smallest amount directly after the Oléeo-Curl cream. I was very pleased to see that my curls weren’t feeling stiff and looking ‘wet’ after. To use: On washed and damp hair, dispense a little product into the palm of your hands and apply it from lengths to ends of your hair. Try relaxing curls with your fingers. Kattia’s tip: Start with a little product and add more if needed. Then, style as usual. This can also be used to touch up second day curls as well! (smooth over lengths to ends pushing up curls to reshape.)
Last tip - Using the entire regimen is obviously recommended for the best results, but if you want to ease your way into it then I would try one of the products first or try to snag some samples!
