Hi babes! This post is all about my current pregnancy skincare routine, although the products I’ll be mentioning are great for non-pregnant women too. 🙂 Soon after I found out I was pregnant I quickly learned that what I put in my body can affect the well-being of my growing baby, and what I put on my body can affect me and the baby, too. There are certain products you should try to avoid when you’re pregnant – we’re not perfect so it’s okay if you haven’t followed every pregnancy “rule” there is. Knowledge is power, so once you learn just try to avoid what you can. A friend in the industry explained skincare risks to me by saying that any products that can penetrate below the skin’s surface (i.e. retinol creams, certain essential oils, etc.) should be avoided. Products that sit on the surface are fine.
What to Avoid During Pregnancy:
• Retinol/Retinoids, Salicylic Acid (like in acne medication), and Hydroquinone (to fade spots).
• No Botox, Fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, etc.) or Latisse (to grow your lashes) either.
• Ammonia – AKA found in many hair dye formulas. (If you absolutely have to touch up greys, they recommend waiting until second trimester)
It was a bummer to have to say bye-bye to some of my favorite skincare products, but I’ve developed a routine that has surprisingly kept my face together this whole pregnancy. Here’s the breakdown 🙂
Day & Night Cleanser: Sunday Riley Ceramic Clay Cleanser – worked amazing before pregnancy and great during too 🙂
Toner: Balancing toner from Le Therapie – love using day and night with a cotton round. I then like applying Boscia’s Sake Water in place of SK-II’s Essence I was using.
Daytime Serum: Skin INC’s Custom Blended Serum – this has been a game changer in my pregnancy. I wasn’t using it before but I’m completely hooked that you can custom blend your own serum and take a helpful quick to help you find the right mix for any skin problem! I also added their Pure Revival Peel into my regimen to keep my skin exfoliated while it gently removes dullness and dead skin cells. Another game changer!! So good that it was featured in my last month’s Bless Box.
(note: for the custom serum blend, create your own at Sephora or on their website!)
Night-time Serum: Elemis Pro Collagen Marine Oil – I replaced my Sunday Riley’s JUNO oil and Good Genes product for this pregnancy safe face oil from Elemis. The difference is Elemis opts for a light Japanese Camellia oil, which is totally safe for pregnant women as most all of their products are.. phew!
Makeup Removing Wipes: Ogee Wipes (also in my last Bless Box!) and I’m seriously obsessed with how gentle and hydrating these wipes leave my skin. I use it simply to remove my makeup before cleansing but it’s awesome to have on the go for a quick skin refresh.
Eye cream: La Mer Genaissance – it’s pricey not going to lie, but this is my current favorite eye cream that doesn’t leave my under eyes feeling tired, heavy and/or greasy. It’s lightweight and noticeably gets the job done.I also love using La Mer’s Ultra hydrating moisturizer and serum to help with the pregnancy belly/boobie itching and stretch marks!
Moisturizer: Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Ultimate Hydro Gel – Prior to pregnancy I was using Sunday Riley’s TIDAL moisturizer and it’s completely safe to use, however, I found another moisturizer that’s awesome and CHEAPER from Dr. Jart. I’ve been using it day and night and honestly my skin has never looked/felt better.
There you have it! If you have any concerns about a skin product, it’s a good idea to discuss it with your healthcare provider. Never hurts to ask 🙂 If you have used a product that contains a potentially harmful ingredient, don’t panic. Simply stop using the product now and pick one with safer ingredients. You got this, mama! 😉
