Relationships

It’s Valentine’s Day and we’re celebrating LOVE today. I’ve almost been married for two years and sometimes I have to pinch myself. I am truly blessed with the best husband.

“Love thrives where love is rooted in commitment. Embrace a deeper sense of responsibility for and accountability to your loved ones, and you’ll be cultivating fertile soil where lasting love can take root. Love requires commitment, and commitment requires abandoning our exit strategy.”

I read that this morning and thought, “Wow so good. Stevie and I have come a long way from our good old college days..”

College days? Well, you guys should probably hear this story. I invited Mr. Hendrix to tell it like you’ve never heard it before.(Spoiler: This is going to be the first of many guest posts on my blog so stay tuned.) Enjoy!

Our (real) Love Story

Before I met Sazan, I was a hopeless romantic. I was always dreaming about what my future wife was going to be like, what she would look like, how we would meet, and the list goes on.  I became so infatuated with the idea of my future spouse that I almost missed her when she came into my life.

It’s 2011. Enter Sazan into my life. When I first laid eyes on Sazan at The University of North Texas I was extremely attracted to her. She wore this fedora hat all the time with her hair in this messy pony tail “top knot” thing you girls call it, and I love how naturally pretty she was. I was instantly drawn to her outer beauty, but I knew nothing about her. I assumed she was far from my #wifeygoals and if we’re being honest here… When I first saw her I thought, “She’s probably one of those ‘Dallas’ girls who is only into guys with money.” (Dallas ladies, forgive me!) I was wrong. So very wrong.

An unexpected surprise

The more I got to know Sazan, the more my heart grew for her. It sounds cheesy but she really did become my best friend. I’ll never forget the day we sat in my car at the park when she shared the complexity of her family situation. She cried and she told me her family would never approve of me or  “us”. I knew little at the time about her Kurdish heritage and the cultural barriers so there was only so much I could say to her. It wasn’t about me. My heart was hurting for her because I could see the pain in her eyes. She asked that we go our separate ways and that it’s for the best. This made me start to question if she really was the one for me. I went back to the mental checklist of my future spouse and suddenly none of the expectations mattered. I couldn’t stop thinking about Sazan.

Conquering Love

Clearly the whole going our separate ways only lasted about 48 hours. We began to embrace one another’s strengths and listen to each other, and this is when it all changed. As we began to work on our weaknesses, a once confused relationship became the best thing that had ever happened to me.

When I look back on everything, my biggest problem was that I had an expectation of exactly what I thought my wife would be. When I gave up the fantasy I thought I wanted, I was given the dream girl I never could have imagined. Sazan is everything I am not, and I like to think I’m the same for her. Thank God for not letting the false expectations blind me from seeing the great person who was right in front of me.

What now?

The honeymoon phase might be over, but I look at Sazan everyday and say DANG girl, is that all that mine??  We’ll never forget the big hill we climbed to get where we are today. It’s a testament to the fact that we can conquer anything together.

P.S. I want to wish a Happy Valentine’s Day to my #1, my darling, my life, and my heart. Sazan, you bring me more joy than you’ll ever know. Thanks for always being by my side, baby.

Love, Stevie

  4. So beautuful 🙂
It kind of reminds me with my family which is really into old tradition and not very open about new horizons. Very hard for me to “suit” their ways and expectations because I can’t recognize myself into what they want or wish for me ! Obviously, my past relationships didn’t last but quite a while though… I think they kind are relieved haha. But I don’t know what awaits me … yet 😉

  10. I’m 20 and a Kurdish girl who grew up in America, and I have yet to break that barrier with my parents. I feel like they love their beliefs more than their own daughter and it’s really hard. The place you two are at right now is something I can only dream of. Really look up to you guys, and I hope I can get there one day. ❤

    1. That’s really sad bc all parents love their child and want the best for them. I’m also Kurdish and grow up here. My religion first in my family Second. Keep that in mind. Nobody. lives forever

    2. That’s really sad bc all parents love their kids and want the best for them. I’m also Kurdish and grow up here. My religion first in my family Second. Keep that in mind. Nobody lives forever.

    3. Hi Deena I’m sorry u feel that way about ur family, but just bc they don’t agree with ur views doesn’t mean they don’t love u. I’m also Kurdish and grow up here. For me it’s always been Religion first family second. And I’ve had many chances to leave my Religion and family and would never do that. I hope u find ur happiness with the right person.

  11. So good to know that everyone has got their hills. You guys are such an inspiration! Here’s to wishing you guys so much more love and joy for time to come. Love you both xx

  12. You guys are such an inspiration for couples. My first love was French,, like 100% french Lol. I was bored and raised in France but my parents are both algerian (culture difference and religion issues with him). Eventhough we were so in Love we decided to end our relationship after 2 years bc of all the différences and the pressure I hae thinking of “what my parents are going to do if they find out?”
Truth is I knew it meant to leave my family and never see them again. That idea killed me and I choose my family over him….
The funny thing is that 6 years later I still talk to him, and we’ve never find someone like each other. I’m afraid I’m gonna regret this decision one day but my faith in God is strong, and I hope He has beautiful plans for me.
Thanks Saran for sharing your story. I felt close to you since the beggining watching your videos and knowing about the problem you went tjrough with him in the video with your friend interviewing you, I was like “ok, this girl is like a big sister!” Jaha.
I Love you, and I hope I’ll got the chance to meet you one day (in Paris maybe ?? :D)
Gros bisous, je vous souhaite tout le bonheur du monde !
    Dounia.

  13. You guys are such an inspiration … I send a message on instagram to Sazan a few weeks ago, telling her my own story and saying how much you, Stevie and Saz’, are inspiring me on my daily life to fight something similar in my relationship with my Kurdish boy. I know Sazan is really busy and have a tons of messages, but i hope you’ll read this message one day (my instagram user name is angelicadsf, if you want to read this message.). I send you both lot of love and blessing from Paris ! And i really hope to meet you some day ! ❤️😘

  14. How cute are they <3
I wish you the best sazan because i really can relate to the culture barrier..

  15. Deena, I’m sorry that u feel that way about ur parents . I’m sure they love u just bc they don’t agree with ur views on life doesn’t mean they don’t love u. Religion is very important. I’m aslo Kurdish and grow up in America. I’m now a parent I love love my baby he is my life, but Religion is very important to me and I don’t want my child lose their Religion or their culture. And I had many chances to leave my Religion and family and choose not too. Best of luck to u.

  16. Deena, Just Remember ur parents love u. They may not have the same views on life as u do, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love u. I’m aslo a Kurdish girl who Who grew up in America. I Would never Break those barriers religion first family second. I’ve had many offers and chances to leave my Religion and family I would never.

  17. You guys have no idea how good it did me to read this, considering that I am currently in college and dealing with relationship issues…
Anyway, I’m happy for you all and may God continue to bless your beautiful relationship!! :* <3
