What Does a Serum REALLY Do?

What does a serum REALLY do? That is the question. I don’t know about you guys but when it comes to my everyday skincare routine, I don’t want to be stressed out about it! I try to keep it as simple and effective as possible. I plan on doing a full skincare routine post soon but in the mean time I wanted to break down the facts about serums.
What is a serum?
A serum is a skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing but BEFORE moisturizing with the intent of delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin. It is made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients. This makes them a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns, like wrinkles. Goodbye, signs of aging! 😉 (via into the gloss)
Your anti-aging skin serum is personal, so make sure you’re getting one that’s going to do the job you want it to do. If there’s one product I’ve left out of my routine, it’s a serum. Oops?
Here’s what I’ve been missing out on after some major research.

  1. Look for high-quality skincare ingredients by reading the skin serum label or researching online, including:
  2. -Vitamin B12
  3. -Folic Acid
  4. -Carrot Root Extract
  5. -Beta-Carotene
  6. -Hibiscus Flower
  7. -Seaweed
  8. -Shea Butter
  9. -Acetyl Dipeptide-1 Cetyl Ester (a peptide that’s found naturally in the human body and helps to increase elastic fibers that strengthen skin)
  10. -Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone (a natural ingredient found in citrus fruits like grapefruit and oranges that helps reduce dark circles under the eyes), and
  11. -Hyaluronic Acid (which helps the skin to maintain a supple look by staying hydrated, and is also found naturally in the human body)
  12. -Palmitoyl  Oligopeptide(which helps to increase the production of both hyaluronic acid and collagen below the surface of the skin)
  13. -Ubiquinone CO-Q-10

Don’t for get to read personal skincare reviews on third party websites as well as the serum’s own brand website; if it’s a new product there may be few reviews but you can check the past users’ ratings to determine their opinions. That always helps!
In my latest video, I’m sharing my current serum routine so check it out if you’d like!

I’m interested to hear your thoughts about serums. Are you currently using one? If you have any favorites of the moment be sure to share with me below.

  1. I just recently added serums to my skin and can’t believe I never did before!! Sometimes you don’t see the results right away but I just need to remind myself my future self will thank me!! haha 🙂

  2. Hi, Sazan! Thank you for posting this video! I have been wanting to start using a serum, but I always assumed it would take the place of a moisturizer. I have a question… for a skin care routine would I cleanse, tone, serum, and then moisturize? Or would I alternate between using a toner and a serum instead of using them during the same skin care sesh?

  3. I’ve been using Sunday Riley Luna’s… but didn’t care for it. I recently purchased Estée Lauder night serum! I was wondering your thoughts on Sheet mask? I recently purchased sk II and Lancer sheet mask to test out. Do you have any good suggestions?

  4. This is REALLY helpful!Ultimately I’d like to improve the texture of my skin. Currently, I have pretty big pores on my T-zone and have dry patches of skin but I haven’t been able to improve it. I work in accounting, so I have pretty long hours and lack of sleep is 100% real in my life (especially since it is tax season)!! Hopefully something like this will help the texture so I can ultimately feel good during those client meeting!

    Much love! xoxo

  5. Hi Sazan,

Thanks for sharing this post. My daily skincare arsenal is not complete is I won’t use a serum. I am currently using L’Oreal Paris Smooth Intense Serum, this so far very effective to my skin.

  6. Hi,
When choosing a serum I make sure that CoQ10 is the of the ingredients. This antioxidant is perfect for skincare products. Serum plays an important role to our beauty arsenal, so choosing the right serum for our skin is important.
